People-powered change – Forward together

Our constituency is situated on aboriginal land that has been inhabited by Indigenous peoples from the beginning.  As settlers, we’re grateful for the opportunity to live here and we thank all the generations of people who have taken care of this land – for thousands of years.

Long before today, there have been First Nations peoples who have been the stewards of this place. In particular, we acknowledge the traditional territory of the Anishnabek (Ah-nish-na-bek), Haudenosaunee (Ho-deh-no-show-nee), and Ojibway (O-jib-way)/Chippewa peoples. This territory is covered by the Upper Canada Treaties.

We recognize and deeply appreciate their historic connection to this place. We also recognize the contributions that the Metis, Inuit, and other Indigenous peoples have made, both in shaping and strengthening this community in particular and our province and country as a whole.
As settlers, this recognition of the contributions and historic importance of Indigenous peoples must also be clearly and overtly connected to our collective commitment to make the promise and the challenge of Truth and Reconciliation real in our communities. That is to say, our words are insufficient and need to be connected to real and meaningful action that contributes to improving the health and wellbeing of Indigenous people. In the context of our Electoral District and Constituency Associations, examples of action include using our power and influence to support and shape public policy in ways that support the wellness and self-determination of Indigenous communities.

Founded on democratic principle and grass-roots advocacy, the Elgin-Middlesex-London chapter of the Green Party of Canada and the Green Party of Ontario was born in 2018. Constituents were eager to establish a local association to represent environmental policy and to demand change at a local level.

With the urgency of the Climate Crisis upon us, EML Greens have been pleased to engage with community partners and initiatives supporting inclusive and progressive policy. From the farmers of Middlesex and Elgin Counties to the small businesses and non-profit organizations, the economy of the area has been significantly impacted by the government’s legislation and attention (or lack thereof) within their priorities.

The time for action is now.

We can no longer avoid the impacts of our negligence as a society. If you are as concerned as we are, we encourage you to get in touch to find out how you can be involved. “It takes a village” to make practical changes, to call on our leaders for accountability, and to demand they take more decisive action.
